What is water hardness — and what it does to your home

💧 What "hard" water really means

Hard water simply means your water carries a high level of dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium. Southern California has some of the hardest water in the country (often 10–20 grains per gallon). It's not unsafe to touch, but as that water heats and evaporates, those minerals drop out and build up as scale.

Over time that scale coats the inside of your pipes, water heater, and fixtures — restricting flow, shortening appliance life, spotting your dishes and glass, and making soap and shampoo hard to rinse (that filmy skin-and-hair feeling). A softener stops the buildup before it starts.

Salt vs. salt-free — what's the difference?

🧂 Salt-Based Softener

Ion-exchange resin swaps hardness minerals for a little sodium — giving you truly soft water.

  • Spot-free dishes, softer skin & hair, less soap
  • Best scale protection for pipes & appliances
  • Needs salt refills every few months
  • Adds a small amount of sodium; uses some water to regenerate
Best for: hard SoCal city water & anyone who wants that "soft-water" feel.

💧 Salt-Free Conditioner

Conditions hardness so it can't stick (scale prevention) — no salt, no sodium, no waste water.

  • Zero salt refills — virtually maintenance-free
  • No sodium added; nothing sent down the drain
  • Water isn't "slippery-soft" — minerals stay in
  • Prevents scale, but won't soften like salt does
Best for: low-sodium households & anyone wanting the lowest maintenance.

Payment Methods Accepted

We accept the following payment methods for your convenience:

  • ACH (Bank Transfer / eCheck): No fee. This is our preferred payment method.
  • Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express): A 3% convenience fee will be added to the total invoice amount.

All credit card convenience fees are non-refundable. ACH payments typically clear within 1–3 business days.

Payment Terms

Payment is due in full upon completion of the installation unless a different payment schedule is specified in the signed Home Improvement Contract. A late fee of 1.5% per month (or the maximum allowed by California law, whichever is less) will be added to any unpaid balance after 30 days. We reserve the right to file a mechanic's lien on the property for any unpaid amounts in accordance with California law (Civil Code §§ 8000 et seq.). Title to all equipment and materials remains with Honest Water California until payment in full is received.

Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy

You may cancel or reschedule your installation appointment with at least 48 hours' prior notice to the scheduled start time at no charge (subject to your statutory cancellation rights under California law).

If you cancel or reschedule with less than 48 hours' notice, a 10% fee based on the total contract/installation price will apply. This fee covers scheduling, preparation, and opportunity costs. The fee is non-refundable and due within 30 days of invoicing.

This policy does not limit or affect your statutory 3-business-day Right to Cancel (or 5-day for seniors 65+) as detailed in the attached Notice of Cancellation.

Warranties

Refer to the attached Honest Water Co Warranty Statement for full details:

  • Lifetime Warranty on System Dry Parts (mechanical and non-consumable components not in direct contact with water).
  • 5-Year Warranty on Control Valve, Circuit Board, and Filtration Media.
  • 1-Year Warranty on Labor for the original installation.
  • Manufacturer warranties on specific components (e.g., Control Valves: 5 Years; Storage/Media Tanks: Lifetime; RO Systems: 1 Year) are passed through.

Warranty Conditions & Limitations: Coverage applies only when the system is installed, operated, and maintained according to Honest Water Co. guidelines. Warranties are void if the system is misused, altered, damaged by freezing, power surges, acts of God, excessive contaminants, or if required maintenance (filter/membrane changes, salt replenishment, etc.) is not performed. Warranties do not cover pre-existing plumbing/electrical/structural conditions or problems caused by changes in water quality after installation.

Replacement parts or services do not extend the original warranty period. This warranty is the exclusive remedy and disclaims all other warranties (express or implied), including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, to the fullest extent permitted by law. Honest Water Co. is not responsible for manufacturer defects beyond passing through the manufacturer's warranty. Total liability is limited to the original purchase price. Labor for post-warranty replacements may incur service fees.

To file a claim, contact Honest Water Co. Customer Support with proof of purchase and installation documentation.

System Performance Disclaimer

Water treatment systems (including whole-house filters, softeners, and RO systems) are designed to improve water quality based on the source water at the time of testing and installation. We do not guarantee specific contaminant removal percentages or final water quality without ongoing independent lab testing at the customer's expense. Reverse Osmosis systems produce wastewater as a normal part of the purification process. Actual performance depends on source water quality, proper maintenance, correct operation of bypass valves, and system use. Results may vary.

Customer Responsibilities

You are responsible for:

  • Providing safe and reasonable access to the installation area.
  • Ensuring water and electrical service are available and can be safely shut off when requested.
  • Maintaining a clear workspace around the equipment.
  • Following the recommended maintenance schedule (filter changes, membrane replacement, salt replenishment, etc.) and keeping records.
  • Notifying us promptly of any leaks or issues after installation.
  • Not modifying the system or allowing unauthorized repairs.

Failure to meet these responsibilities may void warranties and limit our liability.

Exclusions

Our warranty and liability do not cover:

  • Pre-existing plumbing, electrical, or structural issues.
  • Damage caused by others after we leave the job site.
  • Modifications made by the customer or third parties.
  • Normal wear items (filters, membranes, resin, O-rings, etc.).
  • Consequential, incidental, indirect, special, or punitive damages (including but not limited to water damage, appliance damage, or loss of use).

Limitation of Liability

Our total liability under this agreement and the related work shall not exceed the total amount paid by you for the installation/services. In no event shall we be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, to the fullest extent permitted by California law.

Installation Agreement & Scope of Work

This Agreement incorporates the detailed Scope of Work, equipment specifications (e.g., Standard Whole Home Softener / Carbon + Tank Style Reverse Osmosis, etc.), price, and placement details as agreed in the signed Home Improvement Contract or Invoice. Placement of equipment will be determined collaboratively for optimal performance. We will obtain necessary permits where required. Any changes must be documented in a signed change order.

General Provisions

These Terms & Conditions, together with the signed Home Improvement Contract (if applicable), Warranty Statement, Scope of Work, and any attachments, constitute the entire agreement between the parties. They supersede all prior agreements, negotiations, and discussions. Any modifications must be in writing and signed by both parties.

This agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of California. Venue for any disputes shall be in the county where the property is located or Riverside County. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full effect.

By accepting the estimate, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to these Terms & Conditions.

🧹 Clear under the sink

Please clean out the area underneath your kitchen sink so we can install your reverse-osmosis system quickly and cleanly.

What You're Really Comparing

Comparing a comparable whole-home system — installed, apples to apples.

Big Box / National Door-to-Door Honest Water (Today)
Carbon Cheap imported Cheapest (some arsenic-leaching) Jacoby coconut-shell, arsenic-free
Resin Low-grade 4–6% Cheapest available Resin Tech CG10 — USA, 10%
Valve Plastic (2–5 yrs) Plastic Ceramic disc (400+ yrs)
Warranty 5–10 yrs, exclusions Minimal / none Lifetime — parts + labor
Installed price Today's special

We're not the cheapest — and we're proud of that.

We could use cheaper carbon or resin and save a few hundred dollars per system. We don't — because it would compromise your family's water. You're buying peace of mind, better health, and protection for your plumbing and appliances for as long as you live here.
